Transition: Natural Shampoo Bars

In our ‘Transition’ series of blogs, we explain what you can expect when you transition from the standard way of doing things to a more eco or healthy way because it’s not always a clean switch! Some of our natural products can take a bit of settling in to, and some methods can take some getting used to, but we are here to support you while you make changes for the better of yourself, and the planet!

This edition is dedicated to the transition from chemical shampoos to natural shampoo bars. Here is everything you need to know plus some hints, tips, tricks. Enjoy!

The Purge

As most of us will have been using standard chemical shampoos our whole lives, we will need to give our hair/scalp a chance to adjust to our new, better choices. Your scalp may become oily or dry as your body adjusts is oil production, you may even find your hair feels a little drier or a little waxy during this adjustment, but see it through as it will level out pretty fast (about a week on average, depending on how damaged your hair is). Exciting this period is called ‘The Purge’ but is not an excuse to murder your neighbours, even if they are big into single-use plastic.

Once your hair/scalp as adjusted you can expect your hair to feel softer, cleaner, and it may even be more manageable. Shampoo bars clean and conditions your hair without stripping it of its natural balance. Good news, the switch may even clear up dandruff problems as your body can get its natural groove on and stop reacting to nasties in the bottled stuff!

Tips for the transition:

Our friends at friendly soap have come up with these top tips for an easy transition:

  1. Use an apple cider vinegar rinse rather than conditioner, this will help to restore the pH balance of your scalp and remove old chemicals. (recipe below). It will also protect the hair shaft and give your hair shine.
  2. Gently brush your hair often, twice a day is good. Brush from scalp to tips to help redistribute your hairs natural oil.
  3. Give your hair a few days in between washings to allow it to adjust
  4. Rinse thoroughly after washing to remove all of the shampoo.
  5. Try using a bit of dry shampoo or corn starch if your hair is feeling oily, rub a small amount into scalp then brush through
  6. Try using a little argon oil through your hair to help calm frizz and tangles.
  7. If you have a lot of product build up, try the baking soda rinse below before washing your hair with the shampoo bar.

Heres an easy recipe for an Apple Cider Vinegar Rinse:

  • 1 part apple cider vinegar (use the type with the mother)
  • 4 parts water
  • A few drops of your preferred essential oil.

Don’t worry, the vinegar smell will pass once your hair is dry, promise! 

You can also create a Baking Soda RInse if you are getting some greasy issues during the transition.

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is an easy clarifier to use. Baking soda can help to lifts grease and product residue from your hair.

  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • 1 – 2 cups warm water

Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle or cup. Wet hair and spray the rinse on your hair and work it through. Rinse thoroughly with warm water, then shampoo.

When using your new shampoo bar run the bar over your head in one direction, front to back, and then massage into the scalp as usual. Thoroughly rinse with water until ALL the shampoo is out, and you are good to go, you lovely squeaky clean eco bean!

  • Just started using the Lavender shampoo bar, it’s amazing! Smells gorgeous, and feels great on my head. It’s even helped my scalp psoriasis. I was having to use so many chemicals, but now this shampoo is definitely my favourite. So far my purge has been fine, and washing my hair has become a pleasure again, instead of the stressful, anxiety inducing nightmare it use to be.
